For all the English speakers, we had decided to translate our blog into English, and had started translating post by post in the section “In English”. Now, thanks to Google Translation, our entire blog can be read in English, including the sections “our circuits,” “our itinerary,” “our advice,” and “us.”  You just have to click on the link on the right “Our Blog In Australian” and Google translates everything instantaneously in English!

THANKS TO HELENE

Big Surprise!

A blogger friend who is well known in the blogging world wrote an article today about travel blogs on her blog Marketing Plein Les Doigts.  And she wrote about ours!!!!This makes us so happy.

It’s so encouraging that a professional blogger found our blog interesting enough to write about.

So a big thank you to Diane for her support of our project.

Don’t hesitate to visit her blogs if you love art and marketing (and we’re not just saying that because she’s our friend!)

Thanks also for all of your messages of support and advice.

Our itinerary

Our future itinerary can now be found under the tab ‘itinéraire’. We would love any advice on places you have visited Down Under that fall on our planned route.

To do List

Last night we got together to talk about everything we still had to do :
- Photocopy and scan all important documents : Passport, visa, ID card, French drivers license, insurance papers, blood type card, identity photos (and put on USB card)
- Sign up for the international card ISIC (discounts for Greyhound)
- Find additional health insurance valid in Australia and which is not too expensive
- Put all of the addresses of our family and friends in our email accounts to send postcards!!! OK for that we still have some time!!
- Find out which banks have partnerships with our banks in France (BNP and Caisse d’Epargne are our banks)
- Note the number to call if we have any problems and the number of our credit cards

Can you think of anything else ? Tell us

Cancellation insurance

In the end, we ended up calling back the agency where we bought our tickets to buy cancellation insurance (we have 7 days to read all the clauses of the contract and to make our decision).

Really, when a ticket is so expensive, it’s a good idea to get insurance! You never know what could happen to us: dream job offer, broken arm ….
With Mastercard, and other well respected international credit cards, a cancellation insurance is generally included.  Ask your bank !
Regarding the insurance for eventual health related costs, we did not end up buying it through the travel agent.  Instead we have some potential plans which offer more complete coverage for less expensive.

The Headache Itinerary

You probably have felt this way: thinking, hoping, and ultimately finding something impossible to do.
You’ve probably also felt this way: scratching your head, your chin, putting your finger in the air (one of Elodie’s expressions) and go “ah!”, “oh!” “oh no!”.

That is an overview of our first “headache.”

To be more precise, we sent several hours before deciding on our itinerary.

On the one hand, there are so many things to see that it’s difficult to make choices.  Between the different guidebooks, blogs, and people who have already gone to Australia, whose advice should we follow?  And then sometimes one of us really wants to visit a certain place and the other doesn’t!  Basically, we are a real couple and we had to make some compromises.

The second problem has come from our mode of transportation.  There is generally only 1 bus by day that passes through each city.  So, if the bus leaves at 9 AM from city A, it will reach city B at noon, city C at 6 PM, city D at 11 PM, and finally city E at 3 AM!!  And the next day, when we leave from city E, we have to take the bus at 3 in the morning!  You can see the headache this could cause.

We reached the height of our headache last night, around midnight.  We had decided on our itinerary for the west coast, and then we realized that the bus didn’t run Tuesdays and Thursdays!!!

We should be in a better position to give you more information on our itinerary on March 18th.  Don’t forget this date!

But… we still have to verify the bus time tables before leaving, because they may change. Ahhh

Transportation

We thought long and hard before deciding about our mode of transportation while in.  There is a lot of choice:
- The train network in Australia is not very developed.  It’s a country so immense and wild that it is a monumental job to create a line between multiple cities.  For example, Ghan, the line which connects Adelaide to Darwin (cities at complete North-South opposites of the country), is 2750 km (how far in miles?) long.  The work started in 1878.  Abandoned multiple times, it was finally finished in 2004.  We can understand why this line was nicknamed for a long time the “Never Never line”!!  The other major lines serve the east coast and the south well.  But there is only one line between, and nothing else on the west coast!  Basically, it would be impossible to see everything by train, and anyway the prices are pretty high!
- Airplane is very well served by air but we obviously couldn’t enjoy the scenery if we had our heads in the clouds
- Bicycle : Have you seen us? Too sporty for us!!!
- By foot : See above
- By car : We have our drivers licenses but don’t have a good sense of direction when we have to drive on the left ! A little risky no?
- Bus : The solution !!!!!!  Friendly, we should meet other backpackers like us who are travelling around Australia. It might not be very comfortable but our budget will suffer less if we travel by bus.  In addition we will see all of the countryside!
There are several bus companies in Australia, throughout the country. We decided to travel with Greyhound (and who one of us has lots of experience with in USA…!) Serves a large area cons : to be discovered

1000 hits!

Wow!! More than 1,000 visits in just our first week!  Thank you to everyone for your encouragement and your interest in our trip, it really means a lot to us :)

————————————————————————————————-
We’ve made our decision!

2 different options and we have to make a choice.
3/4 weeks to discover Sydney and the surrounding area or 3 months to travel throughout Australia.

Nervous parents, envious friends, hesitant boyfriends, tight budget, increasing costs…

What to do at the end of one’s studies… everything is a question of choice…
Enter directly into the working life; make our LIVES, why not?
Or travel… 1 month… 2 months…. 3 months…
Live an adventure, an experience of a lifetime…

We had to chose, and the choice has been made…
We have decided to leave and the adventure begins now!

To go, or not to go?

Last night I couldn’t fall asleep.  I kept wondering if our plan to go to Australia was a good idea!

On the one hand, it’s an expensive trip, and our job search will be delayed 3 months.  We want to leave at the end of August, because our apprentice contracts don’t end until then, and we will only come back at the end of November.  Soon afterwards it will be Christmas.
So basically we don’t have much hope to find jobs before January!

But on the other hand, it’s a trip I have been dreaming about for a very long time.  I have been working hard to put money aside specifically for this trip.
And then I remembered a girl I met during a party.  She was about my age when she went, alone, in search of adventure to South America for 3 whole months.  She was the one who inspired me to go on this trip!

OK, no more thinking, I am jumping in headfirst!
And anyway, if Orianne also jumping into this adventure, it can’t be that crazy of a plan… or maybe we are both insane!

Around Oz in 90 days!

School’s out! So we are taking the one in a lifetime opportunity to travel throughout Australia before we have to start saving for our retirements!

We have 90 days to travel throughout Australia. If we wanted to stay longer than that we would have to pay for a visa.

We plan to backpack around Australia and its hostels. The whole trip will be by bus, as we are too scared to drive on the left side of the road! We will leave our drivers licenses in France.

Our goal is to see the maximum number of places in the shortest amount of time, and above all to not miss our flight home. This makes it hard to pin down our itinerary as we have to leave room for potential mishaps (flat tire on our bus, kidnappings by a kangaroo or someone going missing after a dip in the ocean…) in order to arrive in time to the Adelaide airport!

We would like to share our trip with you day by day, our adventures, tourism and discoveries in the land of kangaroos and surfers!

Please check back regularly for updates on our blog as our trip develops…

Good blog!

Your idea to travel around Australia is great. You both sound like you are perfectly suited to travel together & I’m sure you are going to have a great journey! ;)

Yes, we drive on the left side of the road, but I really recommend you bring your driving licences anyway, as you never know when you may want or need to drive somewhere.

Good luck with all the planning & let us know if we can ever help you. :))

Thanks for the page in English also!!

de ce coté là, il faut demander un permis international en préfecture, c’est gratuit. Si vous avez juste votre permis français vous ne pourrez pas louer de voiture. Il faut environ 3 semaines à un mois pour l’obtenir.
